Scattering and Dispersal of Ashes

In general, the rules for scattering ashes in Australia are fairly relaxed. There are no restrictions or permits required for the scattering or dispersal of ashes at sea. There's also a great deal of flexibility and freedom for the disposal of cremated remains in public lands, such as parks and wilderness areas. If dispersing ashes that remain contained in an urn, the urn must be biodegradable. It's important to be aware that depending on which state you reside, some local authorities may have their own policies and restrictions for some of the public use sites within their district, such as local beaches, parks, sports facilities and botanic gardens. You may be required to get permission from land owners, park trusts, or local councils, if unsure contact your local council. Regardless of bylaws and restrictions, to avoid any potential backlash or repercussions it's important to dispose ashes and urns in a responsible manner. Also try to be respectful and mindful of others when disposing or scattering ashes in public or private areas, try to isolate your yourself as much as possible to ensure that you're not going to make others uncomfortable given the sensitive nature of the matter.

Conventional Scattering vs Biodegradable Urns:

Scattering ashes is an ancient old tradition, and still today the majority of those choosing cremation eventually scatter the ashes of their loved-ones.

The conventional method of scattering ashes is typically accomplished by simply casting or tossing the ashes to the wind, however it's important to be aware that this method can potentially be a risky and messy ordeal, especially at sea. Cremated remains vary in consistency, some of which will be a fine powder that can easily become airborne, even by a slight breeze. Airborne remains can blow back onto those participating creating a traumatic experience rather than the memorable memorial that was anticipated.

The ashes never become airborne as they remain contained in the urn which acts as a vessel that gradually and safely releases the ashes into nature without harming the environment.
